Rwanda Concludes Successful Pilot Initiative of the Kampala Ministerial Declaration on Migration, Environment and Climate Change
Gakenke, 28 January – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Rwanda, in collaboration with the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), is pleased to announce the successful conclusion of the Kampala Ministerial Declaration on Migration, Environment and Climate Change (KDMECC) pilot initiative in Rwanda. This milestone is marked by the handover of a solar energy system to Mugera Primary School in Muyongwe Sector, Gakenke District.
The KDMECC, signed in August 2022 by 15 African countries, addresses the interconnections between migration, environmental changes, and climate change. The initiative, supported by IOM and REMA, aims to strengthen community resilience through climate-smart energy solutions and reforestation efforts.
As part of the implementation of the regional KEMECC Plan of Action, which aligns with the commitments made under the KDMECC, the handover officially transferred the solar energy system to Mugera Primary School, highlighting the benefits of clean energy for educational institutions and surrounding communities.
“We are delighted to what with what IOM has done for the people here, the whole community of Muyongwe Sector” explains Vestine Mukandayisenga, the Mayor of Gakenke District. “We wish that our partnership will grow and expand, not only in Muyongwe Sector but also in other sectors of the district.”
In addition to the solar system, this initiative also included the provision of Improved Cooking Stoves to 110 vulnerable households and the planting of 5,500 trees, including 2,500 fruit trees, to enhance reduce environmental degradation and support reforestation efforts.
As the threat of climate-related vulnerabilities continues to affect millions around the globe, IOM reaffirms its commitment to supporting sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and community empowerment in Rwanda.
